If you’ve noticed the fine lines, wrinkles, or sagging skin that comes with aging, finding the right combo of cosmetic treatments might be at the forefront of your mind. With the many skin care options available, however, it can be tough to decide what might offer the results you’re looking for.

If your skin is not as radiant and youthful as you’d like, one excellent option is to combine microneedling and Botox or fillers — or both. Let’s look closer at what these treatments offer and how Botox and microneedling could mean seeing results similar to a facelift but without the need for surgery.

What Are Microneedling Procedures?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves creating micro-injuries using very fine needles. These injuries stimulate a natural healing response in the area of treatment.

When your skin suffers any type of wound, your body sends all manner of nutrients to help heal the problem as quickly as possible. This response prompts elastin and collagen production, which are two proteins that keep your skin looking and feeling firm and smooth.

Microneedling can be highly effective for the treatment of these skin concerns:

  • Fine lines

  • Enlarged pores

  • Stretch marks

  • Acne scars

  • Thinning skin

  • Uneven skin tone

Although the most common treatment area is the face, microneedling can be done on your arms, legs, and torso, too.

What Are Botox Injections?

Botox is a neuromodulator made from botulinum toxin. This toxin temporarily interrupts the signals that your brain sends to the muscles at the injection site, helping to address dynamic wrinkles.

When you smile or frown, the facial muscles under your skin contract. Over time, your skin struggles to fall back into place. By preventing the muscles from contracting, Botox gives your face a smoother look.

These injections can be a good option for the treatment of a few types of wrinkles, including:

  • Crow’s feet

  • Glabellar lines

  • Frown lines

  • Bunny lines

  • Lipstick lines

The effects of this neurotoxin last about three months. The injections can train the targeted muscles to be softer, however, so you may need fewer injections as time passes.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectables that help restore volume to your skin. As you age, your skin begins to thin because your body produces less collagen than it used to. Lower levels of collagen result in looser skin. At the same time, some of your facial fat can diminish or shift, leading to further skin sagging.

Injectable dermal fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring acid that increases skin hydration and adds volume. One of the most common brands of dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid is Juvéderm.

Benefits of Combining Microneedling With Botox or Fillers

All three of these cosmetic procedures can be very helpful for the treatment of a variety of skin issues, but combining them gives you the chance to get even better skin rejuvenation results.

Addresses Many Problems

Microneedling helps to boost collagen and elastin production, which can address problems like skin discoloration and scarring, while Botox can tackle wrinkles. If you have sagging skin or you’d like to plump up some areas of your face, fillers can get that done. Combined treatments mean being able to target many of the reasons your skin doesn’t look as youthful as it used to.

Longer-Lasting Results

Combining these facial rejuvenation treatments can mean you benefit from the results for longer. Each procedure bolsters the effects of the others.

Botox with microneedling, for example, stops the contraction of the muscles that create frown lines. If you use microneedling in the area, the new collagen creates healthier skin that doesn’t immediately begin to crease when you frown.

Minimal Side Effects

These cosmetic treatments also have minimal side effects, even when combined. You may experience some bruising, itching, or redness, but these effects should quickly resolve.

Can You Combine Microneedling With Other Treatments?

Microneedling can be combined with other treatments besides Botox and dermal fillers. It’s often used with laser treatments, too. Some microneedling devices include lasers that emit light to target underlying skin layers, prompting even more collagen and elastin production. This can be a good combination for those with skin concerns like scarring or hyperpigmentation.

Another option is to combine microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Microneedling creates tiny wounds and then PRP introduces growth factors into those wounds, prompting the formation of healthier skin.

Who Are Good Candidates for These Procedures?

If you’re thinking about undergoing microneedling or getting Botox or dermal filler injections, the first step is to visit your provider for a consultation. This will allow them to assess your skin to decide whether you are a good candidate for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures and to recommend the right options.

Good candidates are people who are healthy and don’t have any blood clotting problems. You must also have realistic expectations and be ready to follow all post-treatment care instructions.

If you have any muscle laxity issues, you may not be a good candidate for Botox. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you may be unable to receive microneedling or cosmetic injections. Make sure to tell your provider about any medications and supplements you take so that they can assess whether you may continue taking them in the days leading up to your treatment session.
