Otoplasty is performed on men, women, and children of all ages to pin back, reshape, or resize ears that stick out. While the ears continue to grow, children as young as five can be successful candidates; however, we recommend that parents wait until the child is eager and ready for the procedure. Adult candidates should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations. Note: Otoplasty is cosmetic and does not affect ear function.

Ear surgery is performed to:

• Correct the appearance of protruding ears

• Balance asymmetrical ears

• Reduce the size of overly large ears

Dr. Kim makes an incision behind each ear in the fold where the ear meets the skull. Depending on the patient's needs, a small amount of cartilage or skin may be removed, or the cartilage may simply be bent back to reposition the ears closer to the head. Incisions are closed with internal sutures and external stitches.

This is an outpatient procedure. You will wear a soft, velcro headband around the clock for the first week to relieve tension on sutures. We recommend taking one week off work or school. After the first week, you can return to your routine but should continue wearing the support headband while sleeping for the following month. Dr. Kim provides patients with direct contact information so he can be reached at any time during recovery.

The surgery is performed under anesthesia to eliminate pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, bruising, and swelling may develop in the days following surgery, but this can be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication.

While it is impossible to prevent all scarring, Dr. Kim pays meticulous attention to placement. Otoplasty scars are minor and well-hidden within the natural folds behind the ear.

Results are visible immediately and improve as bruising and swelling subside. Final results are typically seen within a few weeks and are long-lasting, often permanent.

Adult patients must stop smoking and avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) for 10–14 days before and after surgery. You must also arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

Otoplasty is very safe when performed by a board-certified surgeon like Dr. Kim. While rare, complications can include reactions to anesthesia, infection, or unfavorable scarring. Patients experiencing any unusual symptoms are advised to call Dr. Kim immediately.
