Fat grafting is performed to provide men and women with a full face and youthful contours. The procedure often takes one and a half to two hours to complete. To personalize your fat grafting, you have many options as to where the fat is taken from.

Dr. Karlinsky or Dr. Kim will perform your fat grafting in-office at our Manhattan location. Only topical and local anesthetics are needed at the site where the fat will be harvested and on the face where it will be added.

Small amounts of fat are removed from one part of the body—often the abdomen—and then purified before being injected into specific areas of the face. Dr. Karlinsky has extensive experience with fat grafting and other facial filler procedures—always paying expert attention to evenly smoothing the fat as it is being injected.

Since your fat grafting procedure is performed using anesthesia, you will not experience any pain.

Many patients undergoing facelift surgery to address deep wrinkles and sagging are also interested in restoring volume for an even more dramatic enhancement. Fat grafting can be combined with facelift surgery to provide men and women with a full, youthful appearance.

Recovery from fat transfer is nearly painless. You may experience slight discomfort in the areas where fat was removed or added, but this is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Any swelling or bruising will subside in a week or two.

While fat is most commonly harvested from the abdomen, some patients benefit from having fat taken from the thighs or buttocks.

Thankfully, no significant incisions are needed to perform fat grafting. There will be very minor incisions made at the fat-harvesting site (as it uses liposuction techniques), but these heal very well and are most often inconspicuous. There are no incisions made at the fat injection site. Therefore, you will be left with your desired results and no scarring.

Fat grafting results are immediate. Just after the procedure, your enhancements may appear slightly larger or fuller than you anticipated. As your surgeon will explain, fat transfer requires the injection of slightly more volume than desired to allow for the body’s natural absorption during healing. This will resolve itself naturally as your face heals and the swelling subsides, resulting in the enhancement you hoped for.

Very little preparation is needed for facial fat transfer, but smoking must be avoided for the month surrounding the procedure.

Unlike synthetic facial fillers, facial improvements with fat injections can last for years. Depending on the degree of enhancements, some patients require several injections to achieve optimal results.

Fat grafting can also be performed at the same time as a facelift or mini facelift surgery.

For some patients, fat transfer can add volume to the buttocks or breasts for a more natural butt or breast enlargement.

Fat transfer is used as part of a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) and can be utilized for fat transfer breast augmentation.
