Rhinoplasty in New York City

Cosmetic and functional nasal concerns are prevalent among men and women of all ages, whether they were present at birth or stemmed from a traumatic injury. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery or a “nose job,” reshapes the nasal structure by surgically altering the cartilage, bone, and skin in your nose to improve aesthetics and breathing capabilities. Rhinoplasty is a surgery of millimeters, and the tiniest change can present a significant improvement to your facial structure. If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your nose or have difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum, contact the rhinoplasty specialists at New Look New Life Cosmetic Surgical Arts in Manhattan to see if nose surgery is right for you.

How Can I Personalize My Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is performed according to each patient’s unique needs and goals. Depending on the extent of modification, your nose surgery may be performed using incisions within the nostrils or through an external incision between your nostrils.  Rhinoplasty corrects nasal concerns by narrowing the nasal bridge, altering nostril openings, reshaping the tip of the nose, or straightening an off-center, crooked nose.

What Is Closed Rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty is chosen for patients who require minimal correction to their nasal structure. This technique does not require any external incisions; instead, the incisions are made within the nostrils for complete scar concealment. Through the incisions, your surgeon may shave down the cartilage and bone or add grafts taken from the septum, ear, or rib.

What Is Open Rhinoplasty?

Open rhinoplasty is ideal for patients who require more extensive correction to their nasal structure. This technique includes an additional incision across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils) so that your surgeon can lift the skin back for increased visualization.  Through the incisions, your surgeon may shave down the cartilage and bone or add grafts taken from the septum, ear, or rib.   Open rhinoplasty results in an external “zig-zag” scar across the base of the columella.

Should I Combine My Nose Surgery With Facelift Surgery?

While rhinoplasty is commonly performed as a standalone procedure, it can be combined with facelift surgery to address the beginning signs of aging. Facelift surgery addresses fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin on the lower two-thirds of the face, from the cheeks to the jawline (and sometimes the neck). For patients who experience signs of aging around the eyes or forehead, rhinoplasty may be combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or brow lift surgery.

Should I Combine My Rhinoplasty With Cheek or Chin Augmentation?

Rhinoplasty is a facial augmentation procedure, and some patients choose to combine this with other facial surgeries, such as chin augmentation or cheek augmentation to maintain facial balance and symmetry.

What Are Your Nose Surgery Concerns?

What Will My Rhinoplasty Recovery Be Like?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, and you will return home shortly after you awake from your surgery. You will likely be required to wear a nasal splint for five to seven days, and your nose will be packed with gauze. Bruising and swelling are expected around the eyes and cheeks, which will typically start to subside within one week. During this time, we ask that you rest and sleep in an upright position to encourage proper blood flow. This will help to minimize swelling further. Most rhinoplasty patients are able to return to work and social engagements within two to three weeks of their rhinoplasty without noticeable signs of the surgery; however, strenuous activity and intensive workouts should be avoided for at least three to six weeks. The board-certified cosmetic surgeons at New Look New Life Cosmetic Surgical Arts provide all of their patients with their cell phone numbers so that they can be reached during the recovery period.

Is Rhinoplasty Painful?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia to prevent any physical pain during the surgery. Some slight discomfort may develop in the following hours and days that can be alleviated with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. As your nose will be packed with gauze, it is common to experience some discomfort and breathing difficulty during the first few days of your recovery. This is very normal and will dissipate shortly.

Will My Rhinoplasty Leave Scars?

Fortunately, rhinoplasty techniques do not result in significant scarring. The extent of your rhinoplasty scars will depend on the surgical method chosen. There is no external scarring for closed rhinoplasty and only a small scar between the nostrils for open rhinoplasty, which would only be visible if your head was tilted back. All scars will fade with time and can be concealed with makeup.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost in New York?

Rhinoplasty is tailored to your personal needs. Therefore, the cost of your rhinoplasty will vary depending on the extent of the procedure, surgeon’s fees, facility fees, anesthesia fees, pre-surgical tests, and post-surgical dressings and appointments. You will be provided with an accurate cost estimate during your consultation at New Look New Life Cosmetic Surgical Arts. What Are Some Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty in Manhattan, NY?

How should I prepare for my rhinoplasty?

Because rhinoplasty is performed under anesthesia, you will be required to stop smoking and taking blood thinners, including ibuprofen, aspirin, and some herbal supplements, for at least two weeks before and after your surgery. You will also need to arrange for a ride to and from our surgery center and plan ample time off work and your day-to-day obligations.

When will I see the results of my rhinoplasty?

While your initial rhinoplasty results can be seen within a few weeks of your procedure, your final results can take between six months and one year to fully develop. This is due to internal bruising and swelling.

Are there any risks associated with rhinoplasty?

You are in experienced hands with the board-certified cosmetic surgeons at New Look New Life Cosmetic Surgical Arts. However, as with all surgical procedures, there is a risk of potential complications. These complications include:

  • Prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia
  • Blood clots
  • Nasal septal perforation
  • Loss of skin sensation (numbness)
  • Unfavorable scarring

You can reduce your risk of these and any other potential complications by following all of your surgeon’s post-operative instructions.

Are there non-surgical alternatives to rhinoplasty?

While there is no non-surgical way to reduce the size of the nose, some patients can undergo a non-surgical rhinoplasty to augment nasal shape or projection. This is achieved using injectable fillers. Dermal fillers can add temporary shape and projection to the bridge or tip of the nose.

Will rhinoplasty help me breathe better?

While rhinoplasty is commonly performed to enhance nasal aesthetics, it can also be utilized to improve nasal function. This is accomplished by a variation of the procedure known as septoplasty. Septoplasty repairs the inner structure of the nose, including the correction of a deviated septum.

How do I know if I am a teenage rhinoplasty candidate?

Rhinoplasty is one of the few cosmetic surgeries that is safely performed on teenagers. To be a candidate for rhinoplasty, teenagers must have a fully developed nasal structure (which usually occurs at 14 for girls and 15 to 16 for boys) and be emotionally mature enough to accept the physical changes to their facial structures.

Will my rhinoplasty results be permanent?

Because rhinoplasty augments the inner structure of your nose, the results are not expected to change significantly. While some age-related laxity may develop around the nose, rhinoplasty results are considered permanent. It is very challenging to anticipate how a patient will heal after their rhinoplasty, and additional cosmetic procedures (including revision rhinoplasty) may be needed to improve or alter results.
