Hymenoplasty in New York City

Hymenoplasty surgery is a procedure that restores the hymen. The hymen is the membrane that partially covers the vagina. Although an intact hymen is thought in many cultures to be a sign of virginity, it can be torn due to many other factors besides having sex.

What Is Hymenoplasty?

During a hymenoplasty, we restore the hymenal ring by taking a thin layer of tissue from the vaginal wall and placing it in the location of the torn hymen. It is a surgical procedure performed under either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

The hymen can tear for multiple reasons, not just penetrative sex. Common causes of a torn hymen include:

  • Exercise
  • Riding a bike or a horse
  • Tampon insertion

A hymenoplasty can repair a torn hymen for women who want to restore it due to cultural, religious, or psychological reasons. It will tighten the vaginal opening and cause bleeding upon penetration. If your religion requires virginity before marriage and this is tested through an intact hymen, a hymenoplasty will help.

Our board-certified cosmetic gynecologist Dr. Rita Shats is highly experienced, compassionate, and discreet, and she will not judge your reasons for wanting a hymenoplasty.

Candidates for Hymenoplasty

Hymenoplasty candidates are typically women who have torn their hymen but want or need it to be intact for religious, cultural, or psychological reasons. In addition, candidates should:

  • Be in good general health
  • Be non-smokers
  • Understand the risks and have realistic expectations

If you have given birth, you will not be a candidate for hymenoplasty. During your consultation, Dr. Shats will discuss your medical history and examine you in order to determine if you are a good candidate for this surgery or not.

Recovery After Hymenoplasty

Hymenoplasty recovery typically takes around 6 to 8 weeks. We’ll give you prescription medication to help with any pain or discomfort, and we’ll also give you detailed post-operative instructions to follow in order to ensure the smoothest possible recovery.

During your recovery, you should refrain from strenuous exercise and any vaginal penetration, including sex and tampon insertion. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, please feel free to contact Dr. Shats. She will be happy to answer your questions and assuage your concerns.

If a woman with a torn hymen wants to restore the hymen for any reason, she may be a candidate for hymenoplasty. If you are interested in this procedure, call New Look New Life today at 646-559-2854 to schedule your consultation.
