Ear Pinning Surgery (Otoplasty) in NYC
Many children and adults with large or protruding ears struggle with low self-esteem or are embarrassed by their appearance. Ear pinning surgery with Dr. Karlinsky is designed to bring the ears closer to the head for a well-balanced facial appearance.
What can ear surgery fix?
- Correct the appearance of protruding ears
- Balance asymmetrical ears
- Reduce the size of overly large ears
Is ear surgery right for my child?
Dr. Karlinsky is expertly trained to safely and effectively address ear concerns for both children and adults. They perform ear surgery on children who are as young as five; however, we recommend that parents do not select ear surgery for their child until the child is eager and ready for the procedure. We also perform otoplasty on adults who wish to cosmetically address ear concerns.

How is otoplasty performed?
During an otoplasty procedure, Dr. Karlinsky makes an incision behind each ear where the ear meets the head. In some patients, a small amount of ear cartilage may be removed to achieve the desired results. In other patients, they may simply bend the cartilage as they pull back the ears and “pins” them closer to the head with internal sutures and external stitches.
How should we prepare for otoplasty?
Dr. Karlinsky will outline all pre-surgery guidelines during your consultation. NSAIDs such as aspirin, Advil® or ibuprofen, and Aleve®, and blood thinning medication must be avoided 10-14 days before and after surgery. Adults will be required to quit smoking for one month surrounding the surgery.
How long does otoplasty surgery take?
Dr. Karlinsky performs otoplasty on most patients in under two hours.
Will my child have to stay overnight for otoplasty surgery?
Neither you nor your child will require an overnight hospital stay following ear surgery. Otoplasty is safely performed under general anesthesia with just a few hours of in-office recovery afterward.
How long does ear surgery recovery take?
Following cosmetic ear surgery at our New York cosmetic surgery location, a soft, velcro headband is worn full-time for about a week to relieve tension on the sutures and ease healing. We recommend that the patient stays home from school or work for one week following otoplasty. After that time, we suggest that the headband continue to be worn part-time—usually during sleep—for a couple more weeks to ensure comfortable and complete healing.
Any risks associated with otoplasty surgery?
Otoplasty is extremely safe and effective. Similar to other cosmetic surgery procedures, risks could include infection, bleeding, or poor scarring. However, otoplasty scars are very minor and are well-hidden behind the folds of the ears.
Patients experiencing any unusual or concerning symptoms are advised to call Dr. Karlinsky’s cell phone immediately.
Will my otoplasty results last?
Otoplasty surgery result can vary by patient and is long lasting; however, depending on the age at which the procedure is performed and the child’s growth rate, it is possible that a revision could be needed in the future.
