Chin Augmentation in New York City

A small or receded chin can throw off your facial balance and make your other features appear larger or more pronounced than they are. Chin augmentation, or chin implant surgery, is a facial enhancement procedure that improves the overall balance of your facial features by correcting the appearance of a weak or recessed chin.

What Are the Benefits of Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is performed on women and men to:

  • Restore facial balance and symmetry
  • Strengthen the jawline
  • Permanently enhance the width and/or projection of the chin
  • Reduce the prominence of a double chin

Am I a Candidate for Chin Implant Surgery?

Chin augmentation is chosen by men and women who were born with naturally weak (recessed) chins. This surgery helps men and women achieve a stronger jawline and a more balanced facial profile. The best candidates for chin augmentation surgery do not smoke, are in good overall health, and have realistic expectations of their results.Dr. Karlinsky and Dr. Kim are highly experienced in providing optimal and natural-looking chin augmentation results.

What Is Discussed During My Chin Augmentation Consultation?

Since chin augmentation is customized to your needs, a consultation with your surgeon at New Look New Life is essential to your surgery’s success. During this meeting, your board-certified cosmetic surgeon will:

  • Discuss your goals for your chin augmentation
  • Evaluate the shape of your chin and jawline
  • Take photos

How Can I Personalize My Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation surgery creates a stronger, natural-looking jawline that is balanced with the rest of the face. This surgery often only takes an hour to complete with results that are visible almost immediately.

What Are My Chin Implant Options?

Chin implants are available in a range of sizes. Dr. Karlinsky or Dr. Kim will work closely with you to select the right one for your goals and facial features.

Where Are My Chin Augmentation Incisions Made?

Chin augmentation is performed under local anesthesia. An incision is made just beneath the chin, and the implant is permanently secured to the bone.

The incision is closed with removable sutures.

Should I Combine My Chin Implant With a Facelift?

Many chin augmentation patients choose to take this time to address unwanted laxity in the face. Facelift surgery minimizes fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin while repositioning facial tissues back to a more youthful position.

Neck lift surgery is also available to address aging in the neck and beneath the chin, such as vertical banding and submental (beneath the chin) laxity. Neck liposuction may be performed to eliminate a double chin or additional fatty deposits on the neck. By reducing submental fat, your chin augmentation results will be much more pronounced.

Should I Combine My Chin Implant With Another Facial Augmentation Procedure?

Unlike facelift or neck lift surgery, chin augmentation alters the physical shape of the face. Therefore, some chin augmentation patients decide to combine their treatment with other facial augmentation procedures, such as cheek augmentation with implants or fillers, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), or fat grafting to the face.

What Are Your Concerns About Chin Augmentation?

What Will My Chin Implant Surgery Recovery Be Like?

Chin augmentation is an outpatient surgery, and you can return home to recover after a short stay in our New Look New Life recovery suite.

You will likely feel well enough to be up on your feet the night of your procedure; although, it is common to experience numbness and soreness in the chin area. We suggest resting and sleeping with your head elevated to ensure proper blood circulation. You may resume light exercise as soon as you feel well enough; however, strenuous activity must be avoided for at least two weeks.

Until your chin is fully healed, you will need to avoid any activity that could bump or shift the implant.

Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini and Dr. Kim provide all of their patients with their cell phone numbers so that they can be reached at any time during recovery.

Is Chin Augmentation Painful?

Chin augmentation is performed under local anesthesia to eliminate any discomfort during the surgery. You may develop swelling, bruising, tenderness, and tightness in the chin and jaw area over the following days that can be lessened with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.

We suggest following a soft-food diet initially to help minimize excess strain on the jaw.

Will My Chin Implant Surgery Leave Scars?

Because an external incision is made beneath the chin, there will be a scar. Dr. Karlinsky and Dr. Kim pay meticulous detail to this incision’s size and placement to help ensure that the scar is not easily visible. All scars fade with time and can be lessened further with the use of topical scar creams.

It is essential to keep the healing incision out of the sun, as this can darken the resulting scar.

What Are Some Frequently Asked Questions About Chin Augmentation?

How should I prepare for my chin implant procedure?

Since your chin augmentation is performed under local anesthesia, we ask that you stop smoking and taking all blood-thinning medication and NSAIDs, such as aspirin, Advil®, ibuprofen, or Aleve®, for at least 10 to 14 days before and after your surgery.

We also suggest planning for adequate time away from work and your day-to-day obligations and arranging for a responsible adult to get you to and from our surgical center.

Can chin augmentation remove my double chin?

Chin augmentation does not remove submental fat; however, because it adds more shape and definition to the chin, the prominence of the double chin may be lessened. If you are displeased by the fullness of your double chin, you can consider combining your augmentation with liposuction of the neck or KYBELLA®, an injectable that dissolves submental fat.

Is there a non-surgical alternative to a chin implant?

There is no non-surgical alternative that can match the results of a chin implant; however, those who are unsure about an implant or those desiring subtle volume enhancement may benefit from injectable fillers. These injectables are good “starter” cosmetic procedures, as they give you a taste of what your cosmetic surgery results may be.

What are the risks associated with chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a straightforward and safe procedure, particularly when performed by a board-certified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Karlinsky or Dr. Kim. Risks are very rare; however, they are not impossible. Patients should be on the lookout for the following complications and contact Dr. Karlinsky or Dr. Kim immediately.

These complications include:

  • Negative reactions to the anesthesia
  • Bleeding/hematoma
  • Infection
  • Prolonged wound healing
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Implant shifting (causing facial asymmetry)

When will I see my chin augmentation results?

You will start to enjoy the benefits of your stronger, prominent chin immediately following your implant surgery. These results will continue to improve and define over the following weeks and months as all residual swelling fades and your implant settles on the bone.

Is my chin implant permanent?

The results of your chin implant will be permanent, and the implant is unlikely to experience any damage or complication that would require removal or replacement. After chin augmentation at New Look New Life Cosmetic Surgical Arts, patients report great satisfaction and renewed self-confidence with their significantly improved facial profile.

Should you develop any dissatisfaction with your results, contact your board-certified New Look New Life surgeon right away.
