Breast Revision in New York, NY
Many women are so excited to get breast augmentation that they may not realize their breast implants may not last forever. Breast implants have a shelf-life; however, this time frame is different for every woman. Most breast implant manufacturers have a 10-year warranty to remove and replace implants, and it is always a good idea for patients to review this information with their doctor. Breast revision is a secondary breast enhancement surgery that is performed to correct or adjust the results of a previous breast augmentation. Breast revision, or breast implant exchange, allows women to remove their implants permanently (if they are displeased) or exchange them for healthy implants or implants of a different size or shape.
Breast revision with New Look New Life helps women fine-tune their breast augmentation for lasting comfort and beauty.

Why Would I Consider Breast Revision?
Breast revision is performed to correct a wide range of issues or address changing personal preferences.
Implant Complications
Complications can occur at any time following your initial breast augmentation that require the removal and replacement of the implant. Common complications include:
- Capsular contracture, where the surrounding scar tissue hardens and starts to contract around the implant, causing aesthetic distortion and physical discomfort
- Implant rupture or leaking, where the silicone shell of the implant weakens and tears, allowing the inner contents of the implant to potentially leak into the body
- Implant displacement (including bottoming out, symmastia, and double bubble deformity), where the implant moves out of the breast pocket
Changes in Aesthetic Preference
Following breast augmentation, some women desire larger implants, others desire smaller implants, and some regret their choice for breast implants altogether. Breast revision allows women to exchange their breast implants for ones of a different size, shape, or texture, or it can let them remove their breast implants permanently.
How Is Breast Revision Performed?
Breast revision involves the removal (and often replacement) of your breast implants. Breast revision is performed under general anesthesia for your comfort and safety. This procedure usually takes between an hour and an hour and a half to complete. An incision is made along the inframammary fold or around the areola to remove the breast implant and surrounding scar tissue. Usually, your surgeon at New Look New Life will use your initial breast augmentation incision. If your implants are being exchanged, the new implant will be inserted into the breast pocket. If you have decided not to replace your implants, then your breast pocket will be tightened, and the incisions closed.
-
Will I Need to Combine My Breast Revision With a Breast Lift?
While some women can remove their implants without experiencing breast sagging, others develop moderate to significant breast ptosis that can only be corrected with a breast lift. Breast lift surgery raises and restores youthfulness to sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the underlying glandular tissues. Breast lift surgery can be performed at the same time as breast revision to return elevation to loose or sagging breasts.

What Will My Breast Revision Recovery Be Like?
Breast revision is an outpatient procedure, and you will be able to return home to begin your recovery soon after your procedure. You can expect to develop some bruising, swelling, tenderness, and general discomfort following your breast revision. A compression garment may be wrapped around your chest to protect the incisions, reduce swelling, promote blood circulation, and ensure that the new implants heal in the correct place. Dr. Karlinsky or Dr. Kim will see you for a follow-up appointment 24 hours after your surgery and another one seven days after your surgery. Most breast revision patients return to work after one or two days, but additional time may be required given the nature of your job. You will need to avoid any heavy lifting, running, or vigorous exercise for at least seven to 10 days. Dr. Karlinsky-Bellini and Dr. Kim provide all of their patients with their cell phone numbers so that they can be reached at any time during your recovery.
-
Is Breast Revision Painful?
Breast revision is performed under general anesthesia to prevent any pain during or immediately after the procedure. You may develop some discomfort in the hours and days following your breast revision, which can be alleviated with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication like TYLENOL®.
-
Will My Breast Revision Leave Scars?
As with any surgical procedure, breast revision will result in scarring. Most often, your surgeon at New Look New Life will use your initial breast augmentation incision to prevent additional scarring. This new incision may be slightly longer (especially if the scar tissue is being removed along with the breast implant in one piece—known as an en bloc capsulectomy) but should be in the same general area. If your initial augmentation incision cannot be used, an additional incision will be made along the inframammary fold (breast crease).

What Are Some Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Revision?
-
How soon can I undergo breast revision after my initial breast augmentation?
While some women remain pleased with the results of their breast augmentation for many years, others develop dissatisfaction with the look of their augmented breasts soon after their breast enhancement. While there is no required length of time between initial breast surgery and secondary breast surgery, patients should wait until their bodies have healed completely.
-
When will I see the results of my breast revision?
The results of your breast revision will be apparent immediately after the surgery and will continue to improve as the bruising and swelling subside. Most women realize their final results after a few weeks.
-
Are my breast revision results permanent?
Every breast revision patient ages differently depending on lifestyle and genetic factors. While your breast implants will be long lasting, they are not necessarily permanent, and you may eventually develop additional implant complications or breast sagging.
-
How can I prepare for my breast revision?
Since breast revision is performed under general anesthesia, you will need to stop taking any blood-thinning medication, including aspirin, ibuprofen, NSAIDs, and some herbal supplements. You will also need to quit smoking for at least 10 to 14 days before and after your surgery. Before your breast revision, it is essential to establish a comfortable recovery zone. You will also need to ask a family member or friend to drive you to and from our surgical center and help with all day-to-day activities, such as cooking, cleaning, and childcare.
-
What are the risks associated with breast revision?
Breast revision is considered to be very safe, especially when performed by board-certified cosmetic surgeons like Dr. Karlinsky and Dr. Kim. While rare, surgical risks are possible. These complications include:
- Negative reactions to the anesthesia
- Bleeding/hematoma
- Infection
- Seroma
- Prolonged wound healing
- Changes or loss in skin or nipple sensation
- Unfavorable scarring
- An additional implant complication
While there is no way to eliminate risk, you can reduce your chances by following all of your surgeon’s recommendations before and after your surgery.
-
Are there ways to prevent implant complications?
Unfortunately, complications can occur at any time with any implant. No matter how well you care for yourself and your augmented breasts, you may eventually experience a complication. It is commonly believed that placing the implant under the muscle reduces the risk of capsular contracture; however, even this does not eliminate the risk.
-
Do breast implants increase my cancer risk?
Breast implants are not now and have never been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, and implants will not prevent any breast cancer testing (mammograms) or treatments. Specific types of textured implants (Allergan™ BIOCELL® implants) have been linked to a rare form of lymphoma known as breast-implant associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This is not breast cancer, but instead something that develops in the scar tissue surrounding the implants. This condition is extremely rare and, when discovered early, can be treated by removing the implant and scar tissue capsule.
