Breast Revision in New York City

Many women are so excited to get breast augmentation that they may not realize their breast implants won’t last forever. Breast implants are long-lasting but not permanent, and their longevity differs for every woman.

Most breast implant manufacturers have a 10-year warranty to remove and replace implants, and it is always a good idea for patients to review this information with their surgeon.
Breast revision is a secondary breast enhancement surgery performed to correct or adjust the results of previous breast augmentation. Breast revision, or breast implant exchange, allows women to remove their implants permanently or exchange them for new implants.

Breast revision with New Look New Life helps women fine-tune their breast augmentation for lasting comfort and beauty.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Revision?

Breast revision allows women to:

  • Restore the appearance and comfort of their breasts
  • Address breast implant complications
  • Upsize their breast implants
  • Downsize their breast implants
  • Remove their breast implants

Am I a Candidate for Breast Revision?

Breast revision is usually performed on women who are experiencing a complication with one or both of their implants or who are displeased by the look or feel of their augmented breasts. Candidates for breast revision should be healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for their results.

12 Reasons for Removing or Replacing Breast Implants

There are several reasons women opt to replace or remove their breast implants, including:

  1. Change in breast size or shape preferences: Over time, a person’s aesthetic preferences may change, prompting removal, replacement, or downsizing of implants.
  2. Ptosis (sagging) or bottoming out: With age and after weight loss or pregnancy, the breasts may sag, or the implants may descend below the natural breast crease, requiring adjustments.
  3. Changes in self-image or lifestyle: Women sometimes have personal reasons to decide that breast implants are no longer for them and choose to remove them permanently.
  4. Implant aging: With time, implants may show signs of aging, leading some individuals to opt for a replacement to maintain the appearance and integrity of the breasts.
  5. Implant size discrepancy: In cases where asymmetry (a size difference between the breasts) causes dissatisfaction, women may choose to replace or remove implants to achieve more balanced breast contours.
  6. Pain or discomfort: Some individuals experience chronic pain, discomfort, or other physical symptoms related to the implants.
  7. Capsular contracture: When scar tissue around the implant tightens, causing the breast to feel firm or change shape, leading to discomfort.
  8. Implant rupture or Leakage: The implant shell may rupture or leak, leading to deflation (in saline implants) or silent leaks (in silicone implants).
  9. Implant positioning issues: Implants may shift position or become malpositioned, leading to asymmetry or an unnatural appearance.
  10. Implant rippling (wrinkling): Sometimes, the implant may develop visible wrinkles or ripples, particularly in women with inadequate natural tissue coverage.
  11. Capsular contraction: Excessive scar tissue may form around the implant, causing discomfort, hardening, or distortion of the breast.
  12. Health concerns: Rarely, individuals may experience health issues possibly related to breast implants, including conditions like Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) prompting removal.

How Can I Personalize My Breast Revision?

Breast revision is a highly customizable procedure that is tailored to your needs.

The surgical experts at New Look New Lift will address all of your breast implant concerns and work diligently to restore the beauty and comfort of your breasts.

Breast revision allows women to exchange their breast implants for ones of a different size, shape, or texture, or it can let them remove their breast implants permanently.

How Is Breast Revision Performed?

Breast revision is performed under general anesthesia for your comfort and safety and involves the removal (and often replacement) of your breast implants.

An incision is made along the inframammary fold or around the areola to remove the breast implant and surrounding scar tissue.

Usually, your surgeon at New Look New Life will use your initial breast augmentation incision.

If your implants are being exchanged, the new implant (based on your choices and desired outcome) will be inserted into the existing breast pockets. If you have decided not to replace your implants, then your breast pockets will be tightened, and the incisions closed.

Will I Need to Combine My Breast Revision With a Breast Lift?

Because breast revision is often sought by women who have had their original implants for some time, a breast lift is often indicated. However, some women can remove their implants without experiencing breast sagging. Breast lift surgery raises and restores youthfulness to drooping breasts by removing excess skin, tightening the underlying tissues, and, in many cases, repositioning the areola nipple complex.

Breast lift surgery can be performed at the same time as breast revision.

What Are Your Concerns?

What Will My Breast Revision Recovery Be Like?

Breast revision is an outpatient procedure, and you should be able to return home to begin your recovery soon after your procedure.

You can expect to experience some bruising, swelling, tenderness, and general discomfort following your breast revision. A compression garment may be wrapped around your chest to protect the incisions, reduce swelling, promote blood circulation, and ensure that the new implants heal in the correct place.

You will see your surgeon for a follow-up appointment 24 hours after your surgery and again one to seven days later.

Most breast revision patients return to work within a week, but additional time may be required depending on the demands of your job. You must avoid heavy lifting, running, or vigorous exercise for at least seven to 10 days.

Your surgeon will provide you with their cell phone number so that they can be reached anytime during your recovery.

Is Breast Revision Painful?

Breast revision is performed under general anesthesia to prevent any pain during or immediately after the procedure. You may develop some discomfort in the hours and days following your breast revision, which can be relieved with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication like TYLENOL®.

Will My Breast Revision Leave Scars?

As with any surgical procedure, breast revision will result in scarring. Your New Look New Life surgeon typically uses your initial breast augmentation incision to prevent additional scarring. This new incision may be slightly longer (especially if scar tissue is being removed along with the breast implant in one piece—known as an en bloc capsulectomy) but should be in the same general area.

If your initial augmentation incision cannot be used, an additional incision will be made along the inframammary fold (breast crease).

Breast Revision FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How soon can I undergo breast revision after my initial breast augmentation?

While most women remain pleased with the results of their breast augmentation for many years, some develop dissatisfaction with the look of their augmented breasts soon after their breast enhancement. While there is no official length of time between initial breast surgery and secondary breast surgery, patients should wait until their bodies have healed completely to best evaluate their results.

When will I see the results of my breast revision?

The results of your breast revision will be apparent immediately after the surgery and will continue to improve as the bruising and swelling subside. Most women realize their final results after a few weeks.

Are my breast revision results permanent?

Every breast revision patient ages differently depending on lifestyle and genetic factors. While your breast implants will be long-lasting, they are not necessarily permanent, and you may eventually develop additional implant complications or breast sagging.

How can I prepare for my breast revision?

You will need to stop taking any blood-thinning medication, including aspirin, ibuprofen, NSAIDs, and some herbal supplements, to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding during surgery. You will also need to quit smoking for at least 10 to 14 days before and after your surgery.

Before your breast revision, it is essential to establish a comfortable recovery area. You will also need to ask a family member or friend to drive you to and from our surgical center and help with all day-to-day activities, such as cooking, cleaning, and childcare, for the first 24 to 48 hours of your recovery.

What are the risks associated with breast revision?

Breast revision is considered to be very safe, especially when performed by board-certified cosmetic surgeons like those at New Look New Life. While rare, surgical risks are possible. These complications include:

  • Adverse reactions to the anesthesia
  • Bleeding/hematoma
  • Infection
  • Seroma
  • Prolonged wound healing
  • Changes or loss in skin or nipple sensation
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • An additional implant complication

Are there ways to prevent implant complications?

Unfortunately, complications can occur at any time with any implant. No matter how well you care for yourself and your augmented breasts, you may experience a complication.

While there is no way to eliminate risk, you can reduce your chances by following all your surgeon’s recommendations before and after your surgery.

Placing the implant under the muscle may reduce the risk of capsular contracture. However, this can not eliminate your risk entirely.

Do breast implants increase my cancer risk?

Breast implants are not now and have never been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, and implants will not prevent any breast cancer testing (mammograms) or treatments.

Specific types of textured implants (Allergan™ BIOCELL® implants) have been linked to a rare form of lymphoma known as breast-implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This blood illness is not breast cancer but an extremely rare condition that develops in the scar tissue surrounding the implants. When discovered early, it can be treated by removing the implant and scar tissue capsule.
