If you’re looking to trim your stomach fat, pinch your waist, or otherwise enhance your body contour as we move into the new year, you’ve probably looked into cosmetic surgery. Two procedures that people are often confused about are tummy tuck and liposuction. It can be difficult to know which procedure you need, as on the surface they perform the same task of reducing fat in order to create a better body shape.
By Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon, Victoria Karlinsky, MD
With so much misinformation being written about liposuction and body sculpting in general, Dr. Victoria Karlinsky decided it was time to provide the FACTS for those considering body sculpting.
Here it goes:
MYTH #1: Liposuction is a great tool for weight loss
THE FACT: Liposuction is not designed for weight loss. Rather it is intended to re-contour areas of your body where fat is resistant to diet or exercise.
MYTH #2: Once you have liposuction, the fat does not return
Liposuction can be performed anywhere on the body. The most popular areas include the arms, stomach, back, and thighs.
THE FACT: If you overeat, fat will return but it will be distributed differently and, most likely, stored in other areas of your body. My advice to patients is to protect your investment in improving how you look and feel…and eat wisely to maintain your beautiful new figure.
MYTH #3: Liposuction is painful
THE FACT: While there may be some mild discomfort after your treatment, we perform the most advanced and modern-day liposuction at New Look New Life Cosmetic Surgical Arts, which is not painful. In fact, we offer “Lunchtime Lipo” when only one area is being treated where patients can go right back to work. With treatment of multiple areas, you can resume your normal activities after a few days.
MYTH #4: After liposuction, you’ll have to wear a compression garment for three to six months
THE FACT: Liposuction used to require long-term compression garments but not anymore! Today, I recommend patients wear a compression garment for one-week day-and-night and another week part-time and then taper off.
MYTH #5: All liposuction requires general anesthesia
THE FACT: When one or two areas are being treated, local anesthesia is recommended. For multiple areas, I do use general anesthesia.
MYTH #6: Liposuction causes lumpy or puckered skin irregularities
THE FACT: Puckering is rare. The key is for the provider to not be overly aggressive and to remove all the fat in an area completely. This takes training, artistry, and experience. A skilled professional will leave the skin smooth and beautiful.
MYTH #7: Liposuction is dangerous
THE FACT: Of course, any surgical procedure carries certain risks but modern-day liposuction is extremely safe in the hands of a trained professional.
MYTH #8: Non-surgical fat reduction treatments are just as effective as liposuction
THE FACT: I have chosen liposuction as my body sculpting method of choice. While non-surgical fat reduction methods certainly have their pluses, they often require multiple treatments whereas liposuction only requires one treatment per area. Liposuction also has a more predictable outcome since it can more specifically target exactly what areas of fat will be removed.

Oh, the sheer gluttony of the holidays. Starting at the end of October with Halloween candy, the sweet season continues until the last of the New Year’s Eve bubbly is enjoyed. Thank our stars—and our waistlines—that the holidays have come and gone, but perhaps not without doing a little damage to our bodies first.
For many New Yorkers, holiday weight gain is no joke. Fortunately, at New Look New Life® Cosmetic Surgical Arts, we have an effective solution that can have whittle your waistline in the time it takes to eat lunch, the aptly named, Lunchtime Lipo!
Whether it’s because of stretched out muscles, loose and sagging skin, or excess fat deposits—the stomach can be a major problem for many men and women. Many of our patients come to New Look New Life Cosmetic Surgical Arts® in hopes of achieving a flat and sexy stomach through a tummy tuck. Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tuck surgery improves the appearance of your torso by restoring abdominal muscle definition, slimming stubborn fat pockets, and removing excess skin.
While tummy tuck surgery is very popular here in New York City, many are surprised to find that they still have something to learn about this tummy-toning procedure.
A slim physique is always in style—especially when it comes to the waistline. A troublesome area for men and women both, the abdomen often holds and stores unwanted fat. For just this reason, “we offer Liposonix in our practice,” says Dr. Karlinsky. With its fat melting ways, Liposonix is “designed to help re-contour an area of the body which are resistant to diet and exercise”—proving itself “a wonderful tool to help people eliminate stubborn fat pockets.”More »
