Why Is a Facelift More Reliable Than Injectables?

4 Minute Read:

Though facial wrinkles, fine lines, and skin laxity are a normal part of the aging process, that doesn’t mean that we have to like these age-related skin issues, nor does it mean that we have to simply lie down and accept them as part of our permanent facial aesthetic.

These skin concerns can make us feel self-conscious about our appearance, and while some issues can be covered with makeup or accessories, the reality is that they are still present when the makeup comes off.

The good news is that there are several different cosmetic options for treating these age-related facial concerns.

Two of the most popular methods for helping men and women of all ages achieve a more youthful facial appearance are facelift surgery and cosmetic injectable treatments.

But, as you will see below, facelift surgery can be the better choice for many patients who are looking to revitalize their facial aesthetic. Read on to find out why…

How Do These Procedures Work?

Facelift

Facelift surgery is a cosmetic surgical procedure that helps to tighten the facial skin (reducing the presence of wrinkles and skin lines) while also repositioning subcutaneous tissue on the face, and eliminating sagging skin. While a facelift is only able to offer correction to the lower two-thirds of the face (from the cheeks to the neck), the results that can be achieved from this surgical procedure are transformative.

For a facelift, one of our board-certified cosmetic surgeons will make incisions on the sides of your face, starting at the temples. These incisions will continue down the profile of your face and end at the base of your scalp. Fat and tissue will be repositioned to give you a more contoured appearance. Then, excess still will be surgically trimmed, and the remaining skin will be pulled tight before the incisions are closed.

Injectables

Some of the most effective injectable treatments include both dermal fillers (such as JUVÉDERM® Ultra, JUVÉDERM® Volbella®, JUVÉDERM® Vollure™, and JUVÉDERM Voluma®) and neuromodulators (like BOTOX Cosmetic® and Dysport® injectables).

The purpose and target location of each injectable treatment varies.

Dermal fillers help to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and lines while also restoring lost volume in various areas of the face. Conversely, neuromodulators reduce the presence of dynamic wrinkles ( wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle contractions from facial expressions and squinting).

As the name suggests, these treatments are injected directly into the face (dermal fillers are usually injected just beneath the skin; neuromodulators are injected directly into the troublesome muscle).

Injectables are fast, effective, and offer stunning results. Additionally, injectables require little-to-no downtime, which means that you don’t need to worry about an extended recovery period. However, injectable treatments cannot offer permanent correction to the face.

Instead, they usually only last several months to a little over a year, depending on the injectable.

How Is a Facelift Better Than Injectables for Some Patients?

While non-surgical treatments offer correction to the facial skin and can even be combined together in a “liquid facelift,” the simple reality is that these treatments really only offer a temporary correction to patients’ faces.

However, if you are looking for a dramatic improvement to your face and neck, then a facelift is often the better choice, especially for older individuals who have noticed more significant signs of aging.

Though dermal fillers can be used on various areas of the face, and a facelift only corrects the lower two-thirds of the face, other surgical procedures like eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and brow lift surgery (forehead lift surgery) can be performed to correct issues on the upper face, including around the eyes and on the forehead.

By combining these facial surgical procedures, you can achieve a total transformation to the entire face, which can have you looking more youthful and feeling more confident for years and years to come.
