Liposuction: Heart Healthy

Already aware of liposuctions slimming ways, many are surprised to learn that liposuction has heart-healthy benefits as well. Research suggests that after liposuction, patients experience lower triglyceride levels and a reduced white blood cell count—both which are associated with heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and obesity.

Triglycerides: When it comes to heart health, triglycerides are an important measure. As a type of fat (lipid) in the blood, high triglyceride levels increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Triglycerides are formed as the body converts and stores unused calories. Triglycerides become harmful at high levels—caused by consistently consuming and storing more calories than you burn.

White Blood Cells: High levels of white blood cells are associated with inflammation and have been linked to coronary heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.

Study Says

Studying the effects of liposuction, researchers measured cholesterol, triglycerides, and white blood cell levels in 322 patients. While cholesterol levels did not change, the latter two showed a dramatic decrease—post liposuction, patients with high levels of triglycerides showed an average reduction of 43% and an 11% decrease in white blood cells. The results were consistent in both men and women.

Stubborn Subcutaneous Fat

A new revelation, the study’s author Dr. Eric Swanson noted, “For years, it has been assumed that ‘visceral fat’ surrounding the internal organs has greater metabolic importance and is more directly linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk than ‘subcutaneous fat’ that lies under the skin. These new findings support recent studies suggesting subcutaneous fat, which can be reduced by liposuction, is just as metabolically important.” Hard to target through diet and exercise, liposuction is one of the most effective methods at successfully targeting and eliminating subcutaneous fat.
