Considering a Facelift? Don’t Forget Your Eyes!

3 Minute Read:

None of us age in precisely the same way. Some of us are first concerned with changes in the appearance of our eyes, while others are primarily troubled by wrinkles in the lower face or hollowed cheeks.

Many of us are plagued by loose skin on our face and neck, and a facelift will address this as well as wrinkles and lines in the low to mid-face region.

However, a facelift cannot reverse the effects time and gravity have around our eyes, such as drooping brows, hooded upper eyelids, or puffy bags beneath the eyes.

If you are considering a facelift, it’s a good idea to talk to your cosmetic surgeon about adding a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) or a brow lift (forehead lift).

How Can Eyelid Surgery Improve Your Appearance?

If your eyelids are beginning to sag or you have bags under your eyes, a blepharoplasty can tighten this skin and remove the excess. This procedure can provide the following benefits:

  • Dramatically younger-looking eyes
  • Help you appear less tired and more alert
  • Improve your peripheral eyesight if sagging skin interferes with vision
  • Smoother skin under the eyes

How Can a Brow Lift Improve Your Appearance?

If you have a droopy, furrowed brow, a brow lift can help you:

  • Lift a sagging brow that puts pressure on your eyelids
  • Stop looking angry
  • Look more interested in others

What to Expect at Your Facelift Consultation

During your consultation, a well-qualified cosmetic surgeon will obtain a complete medical history from you and ask you several lifestyle questions about your use of nicotine and alcohol.

You will be asked to abstain from these practices for a specific amount of time, typically for at least two weeks.

Your surgeon will discuss the facelift surgery (which usually includes a neck lift) and any other facial procedures they think may improve your results. This frequently includes eyelid surgery or a brow lift.

At the time of your consultation, you should mention all your cosmetic concerns so that the surgeon can present you with an appropriate and individualized treatment plan.

What Should I Expect From a Brow Lift or Eyelid Surgery?

Local or general anesthesia is administered before blepharoplasty and/or brow lift surgery to prevent discomfort. Some tenderness, bruising, swelling, and tightness around the eyes and forehead may occur for a few days to a week after the surgery, and this can be managed with prescription or over-the-counter medication.

Scarring from the incisions used for eyelid or eyebrow surgery are small and fade with time. There are typically no permanent detectable scars that result from these procedures.

Eyelid surgery incisions are hidden within the creases of the upper and lower eyelid; brow lift incisions are made within the hairline.

Besides eyelid surgery and a brow lift, these standard procedures can often be completed simultaneously with a facelift:
