Botox® is Not Just for the “11” Lines Between Your Eyebrows

An interview with Dr. Victoria Karlinsky about the “Whole Face Approach” at New Look New Life

Q: What are patients looking for when they ask for Botox?

A: I can’t tell you how often a patient will come to see me and say, “One day, it seems like my face fell and lines have become so noticeable.” This is true for patients over 40, but younger patients who have been squinting or working over a computer are looking to get rid of lines too.

Q: How do you address the whole face at once so that improvement is uniform

A: For some patients, just addressing the 11 lines between the eyes is enough to refresh the face and take away that tired look. However, for many, many of my patients, we need to do more to restore balance and harmony, and to soften forehead lines and crow’s feet. When you address all three areas at once, the results are natural, uniform, and simply amazing.

Q: Can Botox actually PREVENT lines from getting worse?

A: Yes, this is something most people don’t know. Regular treatments with Botox not only keep the face youthful, but can prevent lines from deepening. What also happens is that treatments are needed less frequently because our amazing bodies stop using the muscles that cause the lines. In essence, you can actually “forget to frown.”

Q: As a cosmetic surgeons, what has your training taught you about using Botox?

A: Understanding anatomy is the key to any aesthetic procedure. In the case of Botox, what is important to know is where to do the injections and how much/what strength is just right for each patient’s situation. It takes a sensitive eye and good training to create the most beautiful results.

Q: What do you think are the major MYTHS or misconceptions about Botox?

A: Here are my top 3 myths:

  1. Botox will make my wrinkles worse if I stop using it. Not true. Of course, it’s best to do Botox regularly but, even doing it once, you will always look a little better than if you hadn’t ever done Botox. Wrinkles will come back but never as bad as they would have been.
  2. Botox is just for women. That is absolutely not so. We see many men who simply want to look younger so they can compete in their careers and in their lives.
  3. If I start using Botox, I will have to do it more frequently. Not so. In fact, patients need to use it less and less over time. Ideally, we recommend 2-3 times a year to get rid of wrinkles and keep skin youthful and smooth.
