What is a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery is a highly safe and effective means of permanently reducing breast size. Patients choose breast reduction surgery for both cosmetic and physical reasons.

Is a breast reduction right for me?

Often, women with very large breasts suffer from debilitating back and shoulder pain. You may feel inhibited in your ability to participate in sports or other activities, or to wear certain types of clothing comfortably. Whether you’re self-conscious about your breast size or you would like relief from the excess weight of your large breasts, Dr. Karlinsky can help. Women can have breast reduction surgery at any age, though it is best to wait until the breasts are fully developed.

How soon can I have a breast reduction?

Your breast reduction surgery will be scheduled shortly after your in-office consultation with Dr. Karlinsky.

When will I see the results of my breast reduction?

Your smaller, firmer breasts will be noticeable immediately after surgery. As you heal you will continue to enjoy the freedom of smaller breasts, increased comfort when physically active, and the opportunity to explore a whole new wardrobe.

How should I prepare for a breast reduction?

Blood thinning medication and NSAIDs such as aspirin, Advil® or ibuprofen, Aleve®, and smoking must be avoided 10-14 days before and after surgery.

How is a breast reduction performed by Dr. Karlinsky?

During the procedure Dr. Karlinsky will remove excess breast tissue from the top and sides of the breast through a series of incisions. Once the desired size and shape are achieved, she will reposition the center breast tissue, areola, and nipple as a whole to achieve a lifted appearance.

How long does a breast reduction take?

Breast reduction surgery takes approximately 3 hours.

Do I have to stay overnight after a breast reduction?

An overnight stay is not needed. After the procedure you will rest comfortably in our suite before returning home with a relative or friend for assistance.

How long does recovery take?

Once home you will need some help to be sure you don’t strain your new breasts. Bending, stretching, lifting, and running should be avoided. You will return to Dr. Karlinsky’s office for follow-up the day after surgery and again a week later. In the weeks and months following surgery your scars will begin to fade and nipple sensation will gradually return. While some scars will remain, they are well hidden by clothing.

How soon can I start exercising after a breast revision?

You may resume exercise within 7-10 days of surgery.

What are the breast reduction risks?

Breast reduction surgery with Dr. Karlinsky is very safe and produces highly pleasing results. Surgical risks include infection, bleeding, and poor scarring.

How long will my breast reduction results last?

Breast reduction surgery is permanent, though factors such as weight gain and pregnancy can have a significant impact on breast size in the future. Some patients opt for a breast lift procedure later in life to address the results of aging.
